After spending all of 2021 denying his involvement with Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield has opened up about his involvement with Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was the worst kept secret in Hollywood: No Way Home, the MCU’s third Spidey movie with Tom Holland in the lead, brings back multiple actors from the character’s previous franchises. The film features a multiversal twist that allows different villains and Peter Parkers from alternate universes to suit up alongside Holland in the MCU. Though Marvel and Sony clearly wished to keep certain cameos a secret, reports and leaked images thoroughly wrecked their efforts.
For his part, though, Garfield tried his best to keep things under wraps. A running joke throughout the year became how Garfield, while promoting non-superhero movies like The Eyes of Tammy Faye and tick, tick… BOOM!, would get asked repeatedly . He vehemently insisted he wasn’t, to the point where now fans are claiming he deserves an Oscar for his performance in interviews throughout the year. As many know by now, Garfield, alongside Tobey Maguire, once again plays Peter Parker in No Way Home following his time in Sony’s two Amazing Spider-Man movies.
Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has been out for nearly a month, Garfield has broken his silence in a new interview with Variety. After touching upon topics like what brought him back to the character and whether he would ever do it again (the answer is yes, if it feels right!), Garfield revealed just what it means to him to get the chance to redeem his Spider-Man. Though now it feels like everyone is singing his praises, the Amazing Spider-Man movies are among the least beloved superhero movies of the past decade, and Garfield himself has been open about his disappointment with them. With No Way Home, though, he feels much better, as he explained:
I am so grateful. I’m just really, really grateful that I got to tie up some loose ends for the Peter that I was playing. I love that character and I’m grateful that I got to work with these incredible actors, this incredible director, and Marvel in conjunction with Sony. It was joyful, and a feeling of closure for me. There was so many unanswered questions for my Peter, where we left it. I got to step back in and get some healing for him. And also really supporting [Holland’s] Peter, and honoring his character completing that trilogy, not distracting or detracting from it.
Since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released, fans have flooded social media with calls for Sony to make with Garfield back in the lead. His iteration of the character might’ve drawn mixed responses back in 2012 and 2014, but now there’s renewed admiration for all Garfield brought to the character. As he said in the new interview, Spider-Man: No Way Home was all about closure for him, and that’s a pretty remarkable thing.
Now many fans will surely be wondering what comes next. Right now, there are no official plans to bring Garfield back, though there have been numerous rumors flying around on social media. For example, some fans hope and believe that the recent delay for Sony’s has to do with an added Garfield scene. That might not be the case, but it’s very clear there is a lot of interest in seeing him suit up again. If he doesn’t, though, at least Spider-Man: No Way Home gave him the perfect final installment he was denied years ago.
