I’ll never forget the day I quit my job.
The year was 2013, and I had worked tirelessly in my role as the Director of Family Services at a local funeral home for six years. My husband was still working alongside me as a funeral director, but I knew I had to make the leap to change our lives.
It had been a few years since we started our website, ClubThrifty.com, and I had worked diligently to build up some part-time income through and blogging. By the time I quit my job, I had replaced my $38,000 annual salary in its entirety, and I was so ready to strike out on my own.
It’s crazy to think of how much our lives have changed since we started our blog seven or eight years ago. For starters, my husband Greg was also able to quit his job to work on Club Thrifty full-time in February 2015. And while we earned a little over $100,000 combined at our funeral home jobs during our last year together in 2012, we brought home over $800,000 in income after expenses through online freelance writing and blogging in 2019.
Yes, you read that right — !
That’s crazy, and – frankly – that is not the norm for most people. With that said, I still think blogging is a great business idea, and here’s why.
Reason 1: You Can Start a Blog for Less than $100
Most businesses require some serious start-up cash, but blogging doesn’t require a huge initial investment. You can sign up for a hosting plan that costs less than $10 per month, and creating a basic WordPress website can easily cost less than $100.
Compare that to other business ideas that require a storefront, inventory you need to sell, or a ton of equipment. Chances are good you already have a computer and you’re paying for internet access at your home already. You don’t need much more than that to start a blog, and there are a lot of free tools you can use to expedite the process.

Reason 2: You Can Blog Part-Time
My husband and I started our blog in 2012 when we still . We mostly did this by getting up early to blog before work and blogging at night once our kids were in bed. That’s what we had to do because we have kids, but you can pretty much blog any time you want.
The important thing to understand is that you don’t have to work set hours when you blog. You can get up early, stay up late, or just blog on weekends if that’s what fits with your schedule.
Most other business ideas require you to work specific hours or be available on certain days of the week, but that’s not true with blogging. And that’s yet another reason why blogging is such a for you to try this year, especially if you need to work a full-time job.
Reason 3: You Can Blog Anywhere
These days, my husband and I travel around 20 weeks of the year. We do that because we make a lot of money with our blog (duh), because we can, and because our business is entirely location independent. This brings me to the third reason blogging is such a good business idea – you can do it from anywhere!
Even if you don’t travel, being able to work anywhere has its perks. This might mean you are able to work for an hour during your kid’s basketball practice, or that you can work during your lunch break at your 9-5 job.
Trust me, being able to work from anywhere makes blogging considerably easier. And when you’re trying to , choosing something easy without a ton of barriers is key.
Reason 4: There Are Tons of Ways to Succeed
Some businesses only come with one way to monetize, which can be rather limiting. If you open a taco stand on the side of the road, for example, the only way you’re going to make money is by moving as many tacos as possible. You can add other kinds of food to your offerings, but you’re still just trading your time and your food for cash.
Blogging doesn’t work that way because there are a ton of ways you can monetize. We make most of our income from affiliate marketing, but some other bloggers we know mostly earn their income through sponsorships. You can also make money with ad networks. Heck, you can do all three of those things and probably 20 more strategies I’m not even thinking of right now.
Reason 5: You Can Automate
Whether you have a taco truck or a shoe store or you decide to drive for Uber, you have to be physically present in order for your business to operate. However, that’s not how blogging works at all.
A ton of blog work can be automated so you can do all of your work in chunks. For example, you can write, edit and schedule months of blog posts at a time. You can also automate any ads you set up, and you can set up email funnels that send all kinds of messages entirely on their own.
Most businesses don’t really let you automate, and this is another reason blogging is such an to start when you’re short on time.
Starting a Blog – Final Thoughts
Greg and I aren’t any smarter than you or anyone else. All we did was a) figure out what we wanted to blog about, b) Google everything we could about , and c) execute our plan. We learned pretty much everything we know about making money blogging by looking it up or asking questions in blogging forums, and we also learned a lot through trial and error. But really, it’s just not that hard.
The most important thing here is just getting started — that’s it! You have to get started if you want to start a website that can possibly earn money and ultimately change your life.
